To regenerate a Zoo that was suffering badly from falling visitor numbers by obtaining planning permission for a superstore on redundant land owned by Paignton Zoo. The scheme has transferred the Zoo from under 300,000 visitors per annum to close on 500,000 visitors per annum.
The scheme has involved master planning the development of the whole Zoo and building numerous new facilities including new Ape House, Avian Breeding Centre, Car Park, Education Centre and Toilets, Entrance Building, Elevated Walkways, Free-Flight Aviary, Large Carnivores Enclosure, Restaurant, Rhino House and recently completed Mammal Conservation Centre which is due to open in Spring 2005.
The Marie le Fevre Ape Centre, which was opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, won the Zoo Animal Welfare Award in 1998 which was presented by the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare.
