Kingsbrdige Millennium Bandstand

Client

Kingsbridge Town Council

Location

Town Hall, Kingsbridge, Devon

Budget

£61,000

Completion

May 2000

New bandstand set in the centre of Kingsbridge, adjoining the Town Hall, Market Square and quayside. The new bandstand allows the staging of events without the need for temporary structures.

The bandstand is set within the grounds of the Town Hall and takes advantage of the natural stage to the adjoining Market Square.

A contemporary tubular steel roof structure supported on twin columns supports the bandstand canopy. The roof is clad in natural slate, with faceted hip ends. The stage is set level with the Town Hall gardens, with reconstituted stone steps leading down to the Market Square on the stage frontage and to the faceted sides. A glazed screen encloses the rear of the stage, incorporating engraved murals to a design by a local artist. The octagonal support columns are clad in American white oak, while the support framing and framework to the glazing are finished in white. Removable canvas screens can be added to the faceted side of the stage to provide additional shelter when required.

The bandstand incorporates downlighters within the varnished marine ply ceiling, and stage lighting bars, serviced from a remote electrical control panel to meet the requirements of the varied events staged in Market Square.

Because of the success of the bandstand, we were commissioned by Exmouth Town Council to build a similar structure in Manor Gardens, Exmouth in 2004.
