New 25m swimming pool and learner pool, together with indoor bowls, activity space, community computer suite and café adjacent to an existing sports hall.
The gently sloping site bordering the river serving the centre of Kingsbridge offers wonderful views through an existing tree belt on to the river frontage. Our scheme aimed to inspire swimmers with the feeling that they were swimming in an outdoor environment by arranging the pools alongside the river frontage and providing a fully glazed façade 45m x 9m high to minimize the amount of structure and to maximise the views out over the river. The high sloped soffit of the ceiling from the viewing gallery at the back of the pool, rising towards the front, helps to draw the outside space into the pool hall.
Spacious poolside changing facilities reinforce the sense of being in a covered outside space.
The indoor bowls required a completely enclosed space with no windows and this is sited behind the pool with no views.
A new reception and first floor café with extensive views over the river, placed at the junction between the old sports hall and the new work, centralizes the principal access to the centre.
