New classrooms, refectory and distance learning centre adjoining the existing tower block on the Plymouth College of Further Education campus.
The brief called for a building of exemplar environmental performance with replicable concepts for small business.
The Environmental Building is planned on four storeys around a triangular atrium with a glazed rooflight. The south facing atrium wall is constructed as a heat wall with minimal glazing. The building is orientated to minimise south-west and south-east facing façades. The atrium provides stack effect ventilation, and assists night time cooling.
The upper two floors provide teaching space. A refectory and kitchen are located at ground level, while an open plan distance learning centre is situated at lower ground floor level, with independent external access.
The project was included in the Building Services Awards 2003. |
