Alterations and extensions to grade II listed school.
The original Grade II Listed Victorian school building is set back from the road. It is a prominent and distinctive building which contributes greatly to the character of this location.
Over time the building had unsympathetic extensions to the rear, and had several temporary buildings placed on the site.
The design strategy for the school was to remove all of the temporary buildings and extensions, making it possible to develop the sloping land at the rear of the site, thus leaving the Victorian school building in its original setting unencumbered by peripheral temporary buildings.
The single storey extension avoids replication. so as not to compete with the existing building. Walls were clad in natural finished timber and red sand render, and natural stone filled gabion baskets were used around the extension. The loss of green field has partly been replaced by the new ‘green’ sedum roofs of the extension.
The accommodation comprises of three classrooms, a resource centre, offices, staffroom, toilets and a medical room with a hall, dining/servery and stores contained within the existing refurbished building.
The Head Teacher is quoted as saying “I and the children are delighted”. |
