Kay Elliott Architects were commissioned by Torbay Council to carry out the conversion of an existing concrete-framed multi-storey car park building fronting Torquay Harbour as part of the Torquay Waterfront Regeneration Project. New retail units and a Harbour Master’s Office were constructed along the quay frontage.
The project involved the removal of unsightly waterfront business premises at quay level, and the construction of new retail units on two levels serviced from the car park. The existing Harbour Office was demolished and reconstructed in the original location. Harbour service and storage facilities were incorporated within subterranean vaults at the quay level. New public toilets were also provided.
A bespoke cladding system to the quay frontage was introduced to conceal the existing car park, with a sliding folding door system allowing the retail units at quay level to open fully.
The Harbour Office is located at the harbour end of the quay with faceted glazing affording a commanding view of the Harbour.
Feature lighting masts are provided along the quay frontage and new car park and a mechanical ventilation system was installed to the car park.
The scheme which won the Michelmores/Western Morning News Project of the Year 2002, was submitted to and accepted by CABE as part of the planning process. |
